Become a Swim Instructor in Western Australia

Looking for a flexible, rewarding job that fits around school, university, sport, and other commitments? Becoming a Swim Instructor is a fantastic way to gain valuable workplace skills while making a real difference in your community.

To become a Swim Instructor in Western Australia, individuals must complete an accredited qualification such as AUSTSWIM or a course delivered by Royal Life Saving WA. In addition, instructors must hold a current CPR certificate and a valid Working with Children Check. While students can enrol in a Swim Teacher course from 16 years and 9 months of age, accreditation cannot be issued until they turn 17.

Training includes:

Online theory modules

Practical in-water workshops

Supervised teaching hours

These components ensure instructors develop the skills and confidence needed to deliver safe, engaging and effective swimming lessons.

Royal Life Saving WA regularly offers FREE four-day Swim Teacher courses during school holidays for eligible secondary school students. This provides an accessible pathway into the aquatic industry, with no previous experience required.

Armadale Fitness & Aquatic Centre (AFAC) Practical Student Program

The AFAC Swim School supports trainee instructors by providing supervised practical placements, allowing students to complete their required teaching hours under the guidance of experienced and qualified swim teachers.

Our structured mentoring program helps participants:

Develop practical teaching skills

Build confidence in the aquatic environment

Gain real-world industry experience

We have swim teachers of all ages and backgrounds at AFAC and welcome applications from anyone interested in joining our team.
